There’s something underrated about a random weekday sunbeam finding you exactly when you need it. Today was one of those days.
Before rehab, I took Molly for just a slow wander in the sunshine, breathing in the fresh air and trying not to think too far ahead. Afterwards, I headed to my local café, parked myself in the sun, opened my laptop, and got stuck into meetings and editing work.
Now, working on a tiny laptop screen in bright sunlight with limited vision is far from ideal. The glare was next level, but instead of fighting it, I adapted. I chose to listen to the writing I was editing and focused on work that relied less on my eyes and more on my ears and brain.
It reminded me that self-care doesn’t always mean stopping everything completely. Sometimes it’s simply adjusting to the conditions you find yourself in.
So what started as just a coffee, turned into a sneaky lunch in the sun with Molly beside me. Although judging by the look on her face, she was fairly convinced she deserved half my salad too.
So, I stayed a little longer, because sometimes productivity can wait a moment. Now I’m off to stretch it out in yoga before bunkering down for another indoor work stint this afternoon. I already know I’ll tackle the rest of the day differently because I’ve had sunshine, movement, coffee, good food, and a moment to breathe.
I felt today that my self-care doesn’t have to be extravagant or perfectly planned. Sometimes it’s a dog walk before rehab and having a coffee in the sunshine.
No matter how busy life gets, it’s almost always possible to sneak in moments of self-care and those little moments often make the biggest difference.
